Why You Should Refresh Your Styling Products for Spring

We’re used to hearing that spring is a great time for a makeup shakeup (it feels good to swap out that heavy matte lipstick for a tinted gloss when the sun comes out) but it’s also the perfect season to refresh your hair styling products. “As the weather warms, it’s a great time to revisit what you’re using, take a load off, or start working with your natural texture,” says Pureology Artist Nanette Guild. Check out her suggestions for rejuvenating your routine below.

Lighten Up Your Hairspray

If you spent the winter shellacking your style in place to withstand heavy winds and winter hats, try swapping in a product that still offers control but has a softer finish. “Spring is ideal for hair that feels a little more undone, so pick a lighter hairspray that leaves hair with movement and flexibility,” says Guild. (Think: beach waves that will stick around all day—but can still be brushed.) Guild recommends Soft Finish Hairspray, which is made with orange peel for weightless shine and control, and can boost your volume and tamp down frizz, sans the crunch. It’s also made with an Antifade Complex that blocks the sun’s UVA and UVB rays from dulling your color so you can spend less time in the salon, and more time outdoors.

To use: Hold the hairspray 10-12 inches away from your hair, and spray in short bursts down the hair shaft to maximize shine and avoid wasting any product, says Guild.

Skip the Heat

Spending quality time with a hot blow-dryer on full-blast might’ve felt good when we could still see our breath outside, but in the spring and summer hot tools can feel like a stifling step we’d rather skip. Instead, try a lightweight, leave-in styling cream that’ll enhance your natural texture (translation: no frizz, more body) and leave you with a blow-dry finish without the heat. Guild’s pick: Hydrate Air Dry Cream, which is made with jojoba, sage, and soy protein to strengthen and condition hair and shorten your drying time.

To use: Apply a dime or nickle-sized amount (depending on thickness) to damp hair after cleansing and conditioning, then get on with your day.

Find Weightless Texture

Whether your hair tends to take on more ‘personality’ with the warm weather (oh hello, humidity curls) or falls totally flat with the heat, the right texture spray will still draw out just the right amount of pieceyness and definition. The only downside? Some of the heavier formulas leave hair stiff, sticky, and matte—no fun in the beating sun. Find moveable body and shine with a lightweight spray like Wind Tossed Texture Finishing Spray, which is made with sunflower seed extract to add a healthy sheen without weight. Pro tip: Use the spray to add some oomph and grip to your favorite spring hairstyles, like braids or voluminous ponytails.
